The Barbershop Test

The Barbershop Test
A strange entrance
Shani Edmonds arrives at Joe's Barbershop in Harlem at three in the morning, seeking Lynn Johnson and a group called the Resistance. The bar is dark, and its members treat entry as a security risk.
A coded question
Will asks her to choose whom to save in an absurd hypothetical, and Shani answers that Ben Carson is the less impossible choice. The exchange establishes the group’s wary, theatrical secrecy.
Shani enters a network whose methods are confusing but whose warnings may soon prove relevant to her life.
A Fall from Journalism

A Fall from Journalism
A former colleague appears
Working at Rise & Grind Café, Shani recognizes Eva, a former colleague from Cooper’s Magazine. Eva’s apparent charm and changed presentation revive memories of the betrayal that cost Shani her job.
A warning remembered
Shani recalls Lynn’s prediction that Eva would bring trouble and secretly photographs her. Lynn confirms the identity: Eva is the woman Shani once knew.
Shani’s ordinary café shift becomes an act of surveillance and a renewed confrontation with the past.
Resistance Rules

Resistance Rules
A hidden network
Shani explains that the Resistance insists on avoiding digital tracking and keeping information secret. Its members believe altered Black women are being placed in workplaces and rewarded for undermining other Black women.
Doubts within the group
Shani resents the limits on what she can do, while Lynn insists that she must not confront a possible OBG without instruction. The group’s caution protects its members but frustrates Shani.
Her participation becomes a conflict between disciplined secrecy and her wish to prevent another woman’s harm.
Contacting Nella

Contacting Nella
A decision to intervene
Shani chooses to contact Nella despite the Resistance’s instruction to stay back. She believes Nella may be in danger and does not want to watch another Black woman be manipulated without warning.
The intervention collapses
Lynn discovers Shani’s disobedience and orders her to go black. Before she can escape, someone grabs her and pulls her into a car near Broadway.
Shani’s attempt to protect Nella makes her vulnerable to the very forces she is investigating.
The Exposure Decision

The Exposure Decision
A new newsroom
Now working at Scope Magazine in Portland, Shani prepares an exposé about OBGs and the evidence she has collected. She imagines that publication could expose Wagner and reset the national conversation.
A risky send
Kendra Rae had urged patience, but Shani finally sends the article. The message bounces because the editor she addressed has left, and a polished new interim editor arrives asking for Shani.
Shani’s choice to speak publicly opens the possibility that the cycle she escaped is beginning again.
